Without sunlight reaching the ground, there is little native browse, limited cover, few insects, and poor nesting and brooding habitat. The result is timber that may produce acorns but provides very little of the year-round habitat deer, turkeys, and countless other wildlife species need.

A hatchet or machete is used to make downward cuts through the bark and into the cambium layer around the trunk.
A measured amount of herbicide is then applied directly into each cut.
The tree slowly dies standing, allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor without the expense of logging or extensive chainsaw work.
This technique is especially useful for:
- Sweetgum
- Red maple

- Other low-value or undesirable competitors
The method allows landowners to release valuable oaks, hickories, walnut, and other mast-producing trees.
Basic Technique
- Identify desirable crop trees first.
- Select competing trees that are shading those crop trees.
- Make a series of downward hacks around the trunk
- Leave bark intact between cuts.
- Apply herbicide immediately into each hack.
- Move on to the next tree.
A simple rule of thumb is one hack for every three inches of tree diameter, with evenly spaced cuts around the trunk. Each hack should penetrate through the bark and into the cambium layer, creating a cup capable of holding herbicide.
The objective is not to kill every tree.
The objective is to increase sunlight and release the best trees in the stand.
The Craig Harper Approach
Dr. Craig Harper has long advocated selective timber stand improvement as one of the fastest ways to improve wildlife habitat.
Many habitat managers use what is commonly referred to as the "Craig Harper Cocktail," a combination of herbicides designed to effectively control a broad range of hardwood species through hack-and-squirt applications. Specific ingredients and rates should always be verified using current extension publications and herbicide labels before mixing.
